Sample materials are compiled from a 1940s booklet issued by The Nutritional Committee at General Mills, Inc.
The purpose of the booklet was to help the American home-maker solve war-time problems,
to plan meals to fit the ration points and to fit whatever foods are available.

Comments by my brother Tom - things he remembers as a child during the war
We had Blackout Drills. Everyone turned their lights out and we would huddle down. If you looked out you couldn't see your hand, it was so dark.
I remember Dad was an air raid warden. He would go out at night with a flashlight, whistle and little helmet that looked like a bowl.
His duty was to watch and make sure no planes came over. Because Dad was Italian (Passalaqua) he had a curfew and had to be in early.
We had a Victory Garden because we needed to save on food for the Army, children were enouraged to help. We grew our own vegetables and this helped us
save money and help with having more supplies at the store - that way the Army would have more.
