The History of Figley Field

by Mike "Slim" Simonson

updated on March 6, 2006

As General Manager of the Figley Field Institute since its inception in 1970, I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome friends and strangers to our website. You will find this site safe and friendly, characteristic of the "Minnesota Nice" from which we come.

If you are wondering, as many have asked over the ages "Where the hell is Figley Field?", know that it is a place that exists only in the minds of its members. A green field that is not quite flat, but a slight slant that means base runners run uphill to first base, downhill to second and third, and uphill again to home plate. Shortstops had to learn how to "play the ditch", an indentation between second and third that made life interesting for a bunch of kids who would gather there every summer day to play ball.

We'd play with bats that were broken but taped, and balls wrapped with masking tape. Left-handed hitters weren't allowed to pull the ball since right field was in the woods. We couldn't afford to lose a ball, so anything hit to right field was an automatic out at Figley Field.

We "groomed" the field ourselves when the grass got too long. You would think the result of this barbaric baseball would be highly skilled ballplayers who honed their talents on this challenging surface. That didn't happen, although our left-handed hitters Dean Nelson and Chuck Morrison became excellent opposite field hitters.

Figley Field did teach us about softball, and it did something else. It helped keep a group of guys together even after high school and college. The actual field is now a girl's softball diamond, taken from us by the city of Duluth (without even asking). That's okay. We like to think under that professionally laid out ball field lays a slanted, bumpy field of our own dreams.

Welcome to the Figley Field website. We figured if we built it, people would eventually come here.

A recent visitor to our site was none other than Charles R. Figley, Ph.D. Even though the Good Doctor is not related to our Field, his field of Traumatology seems quite applicable to our won/loss record.
