Origami Challenge
Origami Challenge
Make a Rainbow fold - Create a multi-paper, multi-color, mult-iunit creation that makes sense (or nonsence) out of the colors used.
Make a Face:
Create faces with at least three features (eyes, nose, and mouth), use as many of the “starters” from Group 1 as possible to create each face. An example is given using the “Diaper” base starter. Beginning users may use any folds desired. Advanced users should try to make each face using only mountain and valley folds that are characteristics of Group 1.
Make letters of the alphabet:
Create one or more letter of the alphabet, use as many of the “starters” from Group 1 as possible to create each letter. An example is given using the “Cupboard” base starter to create numbers. Letters could use similar folds. Beginning users may use any folds desired. Advanced users should try to make each letter using only mountain and valley folds that are characteristics of Group 1.
Create a Flying Model (or bird):
Create a paper airplane or bird that flies use as many of the “starters” from Group 1 as possible to create each face. The general model for a “dart starter” is shown below: The same techniques can be used by dividing the paper in thirds, fourths, fifths, etc. Beginning users may use any folds desired. Advanced users should try to make each flying model using only mountain and valley folds that are characteristics of Group 1.
Advance Challenge: Create one original model using each of the twelve groups.
First Fold Challenge
Most, if no all models folded from a square piece of paper begin with on of two possible first folds:
The Diaper (fold in half on the diagonal)
The Book (fold in half bringing opposite sides together)
You might simple refer to the method as the “Symmetrical center fold”
Even when the a “symmetrical center fold” in not part of the completed model,
It is often folded, and then unfolded to serve as a guide line for the next fold.
The challenge is to develop a first-fold that can be consistently and accurately folded without using a symmetrical center fold.
Here are the rules:
1. Start with a square piece of paper
2. No cuts or tears.
3. No use of additional devices for guides or measurements
4. Do not use a symmetrical center fold.
5. The fold must be consistently and accurately folded.
6. The fold can not easily be derived from a center fold
(completed in less than three folds starting with a center fold)
7. The finished fold must consist of straight edges (no rolling or curving as a finished product)
I have been able to fold one fold that meets all criteria except rule 6.
Can you discover how to do it?
Can you create a fold that meets all seven rules?
Good Luck

Below are some simple pictures and diagrams to get you started:
DART STARTER
General Instructions:
1. Fold down a fraction of the paper - The diagram uses a cupboard base to define 1/4 of sheet folded down - Try 1/5 or 1/3 as an alternate.
2. Repeatedly fold corners to the centr line. Try less or more folds - the diagram below is folded to the center two times.
3. Fold the model in half and fold out the wings.
4. Try folding part of the nose under to add more weith to the center of the model.
