Fishers Kiwanis to mark 25th year The Fishers Kiwanis Club is preparing for its 25th anniversary in 2006, celebrating many years of rewarding and successful community service. Started in 1981, the club's first project was soliciting signatures for the creation of Fishers' first park, now Holland Memorial Park. Its second major project continues to this day, hosting the free annual Easter Egg Hunt for Fishers children. This year, more than 12,000 candy-filled eggs were used in the event at Holland Park. During the holiday season of 1982, our Kiwanis Club began the tradition of decorating the grounds of the Fishers Town Hall (now the house in front of Fritz Auto Sales). We erected a tree of lights, and placed lighted figurines and strings of lights around the property. Each year we held a public tree lighting ceremony complete with choir, Santa, hot chocolate and prizes awarded for the best poster colored by local elementary school students. We continued this until the new Town Hall was finished. The town now decorates the grounds. We are most proud of the HSE Key Club, a sponsored youth organization of Kiwanis. Key Clubs exist for high school students to learn leadership skills and community service. The Hamilton Southeastern Key Club is one of the largest and most active in the world. Each year, we offer scholarships, aid to needy families, donations to food pantries, support for Riley Children's Hospital and Ronald McDonald House. A complete list of our service projects can be found on our Web site, http://www.fisherskiwanis.org/. Plans are well underway for our annual golf outing July 10 at Balmoral Private Club. This is one of the ways the club funds our service projects. Participation is open to everyone, please join us. We are also preparing to participate in Fishers First Renaissance Faire, Oct 8-9 Kiwanis is a worldwide organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis fosters principals of good citizenship and human values. Although many of the Fishers members are business or professional people, that is not a requirement. Our members are from all walks of life. We welcome retirees, as well as those not employed outside the home. There are no private rituals, and Kiwanis welcomes public awareness as it helps us achieve our goals. We are looking for new members who want to help make the Fishers community a better place for all. Guests are always welcome at our meetings, the first three Mondays of each month, 6:15 pm in the Garden Room at Pizza Hut. Community Voices is a regular feature of Fishers A.M. This week's installment is by Fishers resident Steven Sharp of the Fishers Kiwanis. If you would like to write an installment, please contact us at fishersam or (317) 444-2600.
