Before you buy an airplane...
If you are in the market to buy an airplane, you are probably doing what most pilots do, and first looking at a Cessna, Bonanza, or Piper -- the kind of plane that you first learned to fly. But before you go too far down that path, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Since owning a plane is supposed to open up your options, you should consider if these planes could do that as much as you dream. There will be their limited useful load to consider -- generally it's only about 1,000 pounds, making calculations of your passengers' weight and baggage necessary. Your maximum speed will be less than 180 knots, which will get you from Denver to Santa Barbara in about seven hours, after one or two refueling stops. The service ceiling is less than 16,000 feet for most planes of this class, and in the ones that can fly any higher, all aboard will have to use oxygen masks -- an inconvenience that can also be alarming to your passengers. If bad weather moves in, the limited capabilities of these planes to get around it become very obvious, as you are forced to land and wait out the storm.
If you don't have that kind of time to waste, read on.
The TBM: The right airplane
If you are thinking about investing in an aircraft, take a look at the TBM. Manufactured by Eads Socata, the TBM is a turbine powered aircraft, a far more powerful and thus more versatile plane than any of the above. If you have extended travel needs, buying part share of a TBM may well be your best option.
With our ability to put together a quarter share fractional ownership, you could own a TBM for as little as $40,000 down and approximately $2,000 per month!
The TBM could be the plane that you've been dreaming of. Its useful load is approximately 2,600 pounds, enough for five passengers, all their luggage, plus a few bikes. It can take you from Denver to Santa Barbara in three hours, with no refueling necessary at all. You'll be in the air while commercial airline passengers are still parking the car or in line for security at DIA, and you'll have arrived by the time the jet passenger is waiting for the luggage carousel to get moving. The TBM is your own personal jet, at an affordable price.
TBM Specs
Imagine flying a very reliable turbine aircraft that can cruise close to 300 knots. Bad weather? You can safely fly over most storms at 31,000 feet in an air-conditioned, pressurized cabin with full de-ice equipment. You can safely take yourself and up to five passengers over 1,000 nautical miles without stopping for fuel. You'll enjoy similar takeoff and landing performance to that of most small general aviation airplanes, and will be able to fly from virtually any airport in the country. You will be able to fly faster, higher, and in greater comfort than any of the others, yet your cost per mile will be approximately the same as the Cessna, Bonanza or Piper.
And best of all, after transition training to learn how to pilot this exceptional airplane, you can fly the TBM yourself!
