Season
Finale Editorial (posted May 21, 2008)
Play
in a drenching downpour, on a half grass-half dirt field, and it all led to a fun and spirited game against Camden Catholic. Although
the boys dropped a 4-2 decision, most of them had a lot of fun.
One player, who was pushed out of bounds sliding into 4" of mud,
commented that "it was like sliding on a Slip N' Slide".
Congratulations
go out to the boys for battling until the end. There were many of
lopsided games where they could have packed it in, not only for that
game, but for the entire year. But they didn't. The team finished with a
1-9 record, but were a much better team by the end of the year.
They closed the gap on a couple of teams that they played twice.
In two losses to Seneca, the goal differential was reduced from 14 to
6. The Camden Catholic goal differential went from 3 to 2, as the
Irish were held to 4 goals in each contest.
Coach
Carlin, and Assistant Coaches Cormier, Gianfortune, and Larkin deserve a
lot of credit for not giving up on the team either. They realized
what they were working with from the start with a first year
program. Early on, the focus was on the basics of passing,
catching, and scooping ground balls. The rotating offense and
defensive slides followed, and finally set plays. Building a
program for the long run takes time. The parents thank each of
them for their dedication and perseverance in molding our boys into
better lacrosse players and more importantly better individuals.
As
for the Seniors, good luck upon your graduation. Hopefully, the
one year of lacrosse you experienced is enough to make you a fan of the
game. Many colleges and universities have lacrosse programs, and
the highly competitive programs may also have club teams.
Regardless of your skill level, there are always 'lax' games out there
waiting for you to play.
