| Makuta
looked up as his henchmen came in through the came entrance. He
sighed, their skin wept and cracked as their wing muscles struggled
to keep them airborne.
“Master… we tried to… tried… But the red one burnt
us…”
“Yes yes… not our fault…”
Makuta’s eyes glowed yellow.
“Tried yes…
but you failed. And for the last time!”
Upon this he held out his hand and then dropped
it, making the two Rama drop out of the air onto the filth of
the floor. They wailed, begging for forgiveness, but Makuta knew
that they were beyond even his help. He came over to them, and
plunged his hands into their hearts, feeling the warmth and life.
Slowly they drew still, and Makuta withdrew. Now pale, the life
drawn out of them, the Nui-Rama bid their farewells to each other.
“Goodbye Waiti…”
“Bye Tetehi…”
And the two Rama left the island.
Makuta looked at them with discontent. He kicked
their bodies into the corner – soon his other servants would dispose
of them. Even Makuta shuddered at the way they ate…
He walked past his cells, most of the occupants
were dead or dying. But one was very much alive. As Makuta drew
near to the cell he could hear the Tohunga still tapping out the
same beat on the bars of the cell. He had started with his cup,
which Makuta had taken away. Then his spoon, which he was again
denied. Now he just used his hands.
“Why do you persist? There is no hope for you.
It has been more than a week since you were captured, and no-one
has come. I don’t mind that beat.”
“Yesyou do. You hate anything beautiful.”
“Now that’s
not true. I like beautiful things… it’s just I like them to be
mine.”
“Uhhuh,” said Rellka, hardly looking up to see
the dark lord.
“You really are pathetic you know that.”
“Haha, says Makuta. Youshould know, you’rethe
meaning of the word.”
Makuta reared up with rage.
“I am not pathetic! YOU are pathetic!”
“Youargue like a child. You makeme sick,” and
then Rellka spat on Makuta’s feet. “Probably made them cleaner-
AHHHHHHH!” and Rellka’s hands dropped to the floor. Rellka looked
up in pain and shock.
Makuta smiled a wicked smile.
