2. Character Bios + Background Story

Character Bios:

Pirihi (Pi-Ri-He) is very frosty, like his home. He hates show-offs and can't stand heat. He works best on his own, is intelligent and deeply scarred by the loss of his best friend, though he doesn't show it.

Moana (Mo-Anna) is very jealous. She sees Maku going on adventures and wants to come along, but Nokama always says she's "too young." Moana is very gentle and thoughtful, but always prepared to take a risk.

Lekopo (Le-Ko-Po) is the youngest Tohunga in his village. He is always picked on by the older ones, but he still cares for them greatly, often venturing out into the trees to bring them back gifts. Lekopo is very loud and is always talking... much to the annoyance of his friends.

Kaiwera (Kay-weer-a) has a very short fuse, and the fact he's always very hot doesn't help. He dislikes working as a team but is a natural leader. He is the right hand man to Jala, Captain of the Ta-Koro Guard.

Kikia (Kick-Ee-A) is always always always talking. He has won awards for his 12 Hour Non-Stop Nattering, and is very difficult to beat in an argument. Although he appears to be a brainless joke dispenser, he thinks about things a lot, and often provides an invaluable contribution to ideas and plans. As you may have guessed, he and Lekopo get on like a riot.

Kohuke (Ko-Huke-Ee) is quiet, and so gets along with everyone. He is a thinker, and is mightily strong. He enjoys riding Ussal Crabs, but they don't seem to like him very much and keep running away... but he always manages to get them back.

Background Story (plot):

It happened long ago, when the world was young, and evil was new. A pattern was set, that neither good nor evil would rule, that a balance would exist- but the darkness, by nature, was greedy... Darkness wished to rule.

When the elements were being empowered by the god of the world, Mata Nui, not all were taken. Some were corrupt- four dark elements. Famine, Pestilence, War, and Death. They easily tainted Mata Nui's corrupt brother... Seduced by their power. And, like the six elements of good, they formed Toa. Dark Toa...

A war shook the world as good and evil clashed, crushing land and mountains, forest and plains, until but one island remained. And there, upon the peak of Ihu, good made a final stand. The six Toa were on the verge of defeat, until six villagers of the island stood by their heroes to fight till death. Death came shortly for them, but their sacrifices saved the island, and what remained of the population.

The six Tohunga were blessed by Mata Nui for their bravery and courage, and became his Chosen warriors, to assist the Toa when they were to be called, to be reborn when the world was in peril. The villagers were thankful, and monuments were erected in their honour, and they named their island in honour of Mata Nui, their generous god.

Like an iron fist, Rahi and dark places now enclose the island, forcing the Tohunga to split up into villages, in order to defend themselves from Makuta. Infection runs free and wild, and anyone it touches became enslaved by the dark lord. But history became legend, and legend became myth. A few remembered the Chosen, and eagerly awaited their return, for they would come. It was destiny.

Because time flows like a river...

And history repeats...

3. How to Play + Whats in Flow of the River?

Whats in Flow of the River?

When you start the game you play as Kaiwera, a little Tohunga from Ta-Koro with a very short fuse. You are told to go on a great quest, and visit strange places, full of power and mystery. As you move around Mata Nui, and go to the six villages, more Tohunga will join your cause. But what your quest is for and where it will end... well, you'll just have to get playing!

How to Play

Flow of The River uses the simple controls of the up, down, left and right arrows on your keyboard to navigate. To select, talk, or search for things, you use the Enter or Space key. To scroll up and down menus, use the up and down arrows, or the mouse. The mouse can be used to move around, but is inaccurate and clumsy.

Almost as soon as you start, you will battle some Rahi.

(note: colour of the menus may differ depending on your PC)

Once you get to the battle mode (above), you have the options of:
Fight- which will lead to a choice of which Rahi to fight.
Magic/Skills- which allows you to choose and use any magic you have learnt on your enemies, yourself or comrades (you will have no magic at the start). Magic you will learn as you gain EXP (experience) from the Rahi you battle. When you get enough EXP you will advance a skill level, and as you gain more levels you will learn more powerful magic attacks or healing spells.
Item- Which lets you choose and use an item from your inventory during battle.
Escape- Lets you run away from the Rahi, but you take the risk of being hit once by all Rahi present, and the enemy may block your escape before you make it away.
Auto Battle- This puts you in "automatic pilot for the battle", which is useful for minor Rahi. The game will make dicisions about how is best to battle your opponent, and may use some of your Magic attacks or healing spells. You can exit AB by right clicking the mouse.

Every time a Rahi hits you you loose a number, which is stated, off your total life points (HP -hit points). Sometimes you get a 'Multiple Attack' from a Rahi. When this happens, a Rahi will attack twice in one go, and take twice as much points away from your life.

When you defeat a Rahi, you win coins to buy things with, and get experience points (EXP) which you collect to move up in your level. For each member of your group, they have a level. You start off at level 1, and have to get EXP Points to work up from that to a maximum of level 100. As you gain levels, you become stronger, have more defence, intelligence, speed, and experience, which make it easier for you to battle your enemies, and harder for your foes to harm or defeat you.

Sometimes Rahi drop things when they are defeated. These include Weapons and Potions, which are then displayed in your inventory, ready for use. You can never loose any of your items to Rahi, or other opponents.

Sometimes, when you are battling really hard Rahi they can actually defeat members of your party. When this happens, their names will be displayed in red on the menu, and whilst you are walking around, you will notice the "dead" sprite has stopped moving his/her feet and arms. You can restore your members consciousness by sleeping at an Inn.

Whilst you are moving around Mata Nui, you will be able to follow paths, and go through doorways. Watch out for suspicious areas if you can't find a doorway, and for caves, which are well disguised. Levers, which look like this: are used to open doors near you, or in another area, which you will need to open to continue your quest. You will need to walk right up and face-on to a lever and press Enter or space to flick it.

There are signs all over the place, which are useful for knowing where you are, and where you have to go. You need to be facing them from the front and press Enter or space to read them. They look like this: and this: .

Some of the dwellings in the villages sell things, or provide a service. The shops have a sign like this on them: and the Inns have a on them. Shops are there for buying items to help you on your quest. As you complete more villages, you can buy more powerful items to help you through harder challenges. Inns are used for sleeping a night, and they also replenish your HP, MP and will wake an unconscious member. For a small price in most villages, this is a very good deal.

To talk to people in the villages, you will need to again face them head on, and press Enter/Space. They are good to talk to, and have very useful things to say to help you on your quest…

If you right click or press Esc (escape) during playing Flow of The River, a menu will appear, with these options:

Item- Which lets you choose and use an item on yourself or comrades.
Magic/Skills- Which allows you to choose and use any magic you have learnt, on yourself or comrades (you will have no magic at the start).
Equipment- This is where you can equip yourself with Weapons and Amour from shops, or dropped by Rahi. You simply select the member you want to equip from your party (the Tohunga you are traveling with), then what sort of item it is you wish to give them. Once you have done that, you can choose which weapon to give them, from the ones you have in the inventory. If that member has a poorer quality item already, it will replace the newer item in the inventory, which means you can either equip it to another member or sell it at the shops. A message will tell you how much your members skills have moved by, depending on which weapon you have given them, e.g. Defence increased by 20! Or -character- attack increased by 5! It is a good idea to buy weapons for all of your group, not just for yourself, so they do not get defeated in battle.
Status- This is where you can check up on your and your group's health and equipment. A typical status looks like this:

(note: colour of the menus may differ depending on your PC)

This status is for the first character, Kaiwera. He is on level 17, as displayed on the top. He normal, not unconscious. His HP is damaged, as it displays it to be 208/ 261. The first number displays the character's current HP (Hit Points), and the second displays the maximum HP. His MP (Magic Points) are low, because they have been used. Kaiwera has received 2832 EXP Points in total. In the 'Level Up' row, he needs only 58 more EXP points to go up a level. His Intelligence (Int) is 14, his attack power is 57, his defence power is 50, and his speed is 1. He is equipped with a Long Sword Weapon, and Breast Plate Amour. Different characters in the game have different statuses; depending on which village they come from. Ta-Koronan villagers will have a high Attack, where as Po-Kornians will have a high Speed, and Ko-Koronans will have a high intelligence. In the bottom corner, you can see the number of coins the party is carrying between them, in this case 129.
Exchange- This allows you to set who leads you trail of members, who comes second and third, etc. E.g. or or . When you battle Rahi, you can only take four members into the fight. Depending on your order, the first four members will be selected to battle. It is a good idea to put your high HP members at the front, and to keep the members who can heal others at the back.
System- This menu lets you open a saved game, view the Run Time Version popup, or exit from playing Flow of the River. You can also select Full Screen to swap from full screen to window, and back. By clicking on the "Save Game" option, you can save you progress. Choose a place to save where you will easily remember. When you start the game again, you can choose the "Load Game" option, and continue from where you left.

We suggest that Flow of the River is played a little a day, for maximum enjoyment.

4. Items and Shops

When you enter villages, there are shops, which you can buy things from. There are three categories of things you can buy: Potions, Amour, and Weapons. Potions are used to heal or revitalize you and your group, Amour is used to increase defence level, and Weapons give you more power in your attacks. As you complete more villages, the items generally become more expensive, and more powerful, to help you on with the tougher challenges ahead.

Once you have entered the store, go up to the Tohunga at the till, and press Enter/Space. You will have three choices: Sell, Buy or Finished. You can buy whatever you like, as long as you have enough coins. To sell items, you will need to have them spare. When you equip your group with more powerful items, the old ones are put into your inventory. You can now sell these old items, or Potions, at half their original price to the shopkeeper.
