Oil change and freon check on E34 535I

Unbolt the oil filter lid, pull the bolt part way out, while holding the lid down for 30 seconds with your fingers

to prevent oil from leaking out the sides. This allows air to come in and drain cannister.

After 30 seconds enough oil should drain that you can remove your fingers.

Next remove the oil drain plug, while the filter cannister is draining.

After it drains replace the drain plug.

Remove and replace the 2 o-rings from the lid and bolt.

Next remove and replace the filter.

Replace the lid with new o-ring and tighten lid. Fill with 5 1/2 qts. of oil.

Start the engine and let run for a few minutes while checking for leaks.

Check oil at red dipstick seen in picture above.

Freon check and fill valve location

Remove the cover to the AC sightglass and fill valves, located by the passenger side firewall.

Look at the sightglass, if you see a lot of bubbles and the AC has trouble cooling

you've probably found your problem.

If you see only a few bubbles going by it's probably fairly full and not your problem.

If it's clear your system is either empty or over full. If you know the system is full you should see at least one bubble go by per second.

If no bubbles at all your system is overfull. If your familiar with AC pressure gauges you may connect them at the above valve locations and

check for excessive pressures from over charge.

See that the auxillary fan is working in front of the condenser. It will be on whenever the compressor is engaged.

If the fan does not come on with the compressor the most common problem is a faulty resistor which is located on the frame of the fan.

If the resistor has continuity then you may have another problem with the fan itself, relay, fuse etc which is beyond what I wish to cover here.
