Will's Crib Before my first grandchild, Will, was born, I knew that I wanted to build a cradle or a crib for him. My wife and daughter both vetoed a cradle as not being very useful for long. So it was a crib. I got the hardware from Rockler and did some research on the web about requirements for cribs. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has guide lines for the design and construction of cribs and I made sure to follow them. I also wanted the crib to be in the Mission or Arts and Crafts style. The result is shown to the left - the top picture is a view from the side and the next picture down is a view of the end panel. This crib has survived Will and his brother Josh with only recently one insert having to be reglued in place and one side rail coming loose which I reglued. It's now ready for number 3 due in November 2008. |

| Sam's Crib When my younger daughter announced that she was "with child" in 2007 she did so by asking me to make her a crib like I had made for her older sister. How could a Papa Frank say no? However, I changed the design just a little bit. Will's crib had convenient toes holds in the end panels that made it easy for a young man to climb. Knowing that my younger daughter and her husband were going to have a little monkey (their term, not mine) I decided to remove the escape route as shown to the left. The final result is shown in the bottom. Note the monkeys. I'm now making a third crib - this one for my younger daughter as well because the US Army gave my son-in-law a four-day pass at just the wrong/right time, so her second child is due in October 2008. This crib will be a convertible - transforming into a toddler's bed. However, its style will be the same as Sam's crib. |

| Sam's Crib II The pictures below show the progress I've made on Sam's Crib II (because it's the second crib for my grandson Sam - His sister will use his old crib.) The first picture shows the rodless system (circled) I'm using on this crib. |

This is a highlight of the rodless system as well as the construction of the corners. I'm using connector bolts and cylinder nuts to lock the ends to the sides. It's amazingly stable. |
| This shows the lower part of the rodless system. There will be a bumper at the lower end to keep the side from dropping to the floor. | ![]() |

This is view of the entire crib so you'll know what it will look like. I still need to put the inserts in for the mattress support. |
| This is the side to convert the crib into a toddler's bed. All you have to do to convert is remove the side supports of the crib and replace them with the toddler's bed side. | ![]() |

This is a view of the end panel. It's the same design as the end panel for the original Sam's Crib. |
