June means roses in zone 6 gardens. They are at their best now. Many of them bloom during the summer and into the autumn, but not with the enthusiasm of the first flush of bloom. Early in the month the blooms and foliage are pristine. Japanese beetles and black spot come later. Late peonies are making grand displays in the border. I'm sure open peony blooms cause rain, particularly the double varieties. I intend to stake the peonies each spring to keep those glorious flowers from falling to the ground because of rain. I didn't do it yet. I'm going to do it next year. Really I am. June is the month I begin to completely enjoy the garden. During April and May I'm convinced that this year the plan is going to work and I try to catch up. By June I'm ready to forget the plan and accept things as they come. The garden becomes instantly more enjoyable. main page | gardening links | site map |
