Dogwood in autumn October garden musings about tree topping and trees in gardening with Sommer in the garden
October garden musings about trees and tree topping in gardening with Sommer in the garden

I don't often notice spiders in the garden. They don't make much noise and they aren't big or bright. Occasionally I find a crab spider in a bloom and there are webs in the corners of equipment shed.

In late summer I sometimes walk into the web of an orb spider as I go between trees or shrubs. The webs are big and so are the spiders that make them. Still you are unaware of the web until you are wearing it. I'm sure the spider is as disgusted with the results of the encounter as I am, although for a different reason.

October morning here are often foggy. As the sun comes up on those foggy mornings it becomes evident there are more spiders in the garden than it appears during the summer. Dozens of webs the size of a hand span are visible across the tops of the yew, they hang in the tall grasses and form barriers between the shrubs and trees. All made visible for a brief time by tiny droplets of water.
