Suzuki/Fay Meyers 2004 Cycle Fest Rally and AMA SuperMoto Championship Series Opener

Doug Henry

Copper Mountain, CO - The second annual Cycle Fest Rally was bigger and better than the first by far. Held at the beautiful Copper Mountain Ski Resort the event saw an increase in manufacturer participation, a larger selection of vendors, a bike show, and the opening rounds of the AMA SuperMoto National Championship. Attendance was up and although the weather was on the cool side Cycle Fest offered something for anyone who has an interest in motorcycles and plenty of interested motorcyclist were on hand.

Buell, Triumph, Honda, Aprillia, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and Moto Guzzi offered their latest models for test rides all three days. The new Triumph 2300cc Rocket 3 was one of the favorite demos and you had to be the early bird to catch a ride on this power house. The Buell tent stayed busy also with the new 1200cc models being very popular.

Guided and un-guided Street ands Dual Sport rides were offered and Suzuki had a ATV demo area set for the 4 wheel crowd.

The vendor mall was well attended with SuperMoto Sponsor Fay Myers, Rev-Lock Automatic Clutches, Enrico Motorsports, FMF, K&N, and Dunlop all having Display booths on the mall. Dunlop also offered tire checks for all bikes and a sport bike suspension class was very popular with the crowd.

A custom bike show was held on Saturday and the entries included  from an antique Indian, a fully restored Yanaha JT60, and a one off Custom. There was also a nice looking BMW boxer and several other excellent looking bikes.

The SuperMoto races were exciting with and expanded entry list and format. On Saturday Doug Henry took command of the 450cc class on His Troy Lee Sponsored Honda CRF450 winning the main event ahead of superpole winner and multi-time national champion Jeff Ward also on a Troy Lee CRF450, third went to Jurgen Kunzel on a KTM.  Sundays 450cc class went to Jeff Ward who was followed by Alexandre Thiebault. Third went to Kunzel who also took the Superpole on Sunday. Doug henry suffered a mechanical and scored no points on Sunday.

The Unlimited class was a KTM affair with Jurgen Kunzel, Kurt Nicoll, and former National Motocross Champion Mickey Dymond taking third both days. Added this year were two jumps on the asphalt section which kept straightaway speed down but provided much more crowd pleasing action than the previous year.

Look for Cycle Fest 3 to be bigger and better. See you in 2005!
