07-23-06 Lakewood, CO - Ricky Carmichael and Ryan Villapoto dominated their respective classes at round 7 of the AMA National Motocross Championship held at the Thunder Valley Motocross complex just west of Denver, CO. The crowed of 26,685 is the largest attendance to date at this years series and the riders treated the race fans to high flying action all afternoon.
Seventeen year old Ryan Villapoto put his KX250F in front in both moto's and set a blistering pace on his way to a 1-1 tally for the overall win in the Motocross Lites class. Villapoto went down early in the second moto and dropped to fourth for a lap before he charged back into the lead and on to the final moto win. Suzuki mounted Broc Hepler put in 4-2 moto finishes for second overall. KTM's Mike Alessi took the final spot on the podium with 3-3 scores. Local favorite Andrew Short took second in the first moto and looked strong in moto two until a crash put the Honda rider in 33rd. Short finished 7th overall for the day.
Ricky Carmichael moved his Makita Suzuki into the lead early in both motos and once again demonstrated his ability to run away from the rest of the riders. Carmichael's toughest competition came from Honda's Davi Millsaps who led the first moto early and held on for 3-2 finishes and second overall. Third went to a subdued James Stewart who took the 3rd spot on the podium with 2-5 motos. Chad Reed suffering from an injured knee was off the pace all day.
