The Liberty Land Trust is a privately funded, non-profit organization, which was founded as a response to the Community Preservation Act (CPA), now under consideration in many of Massachusetts’ towns. The CPA is a state program that allows our towns and cities to levy a new tax surcharge of up to 3% on real estate. The revenues derived from these taxes must be used for three purposes: the preservation of open space, historic sites, and the creation of affordable housing. While few doubt the need for all of these programs, the founders of the Liberty Land Trust believe that there is a better way – one that depends on private initiative and does not compel anyone to contribute to the cause. Unlike the CPA, our definition of "open space" does not include ball fields and playgrounds, but refers only to land that is maintained in its natural state. ![]() |
![]() A Truly Private Initiative The Liberty Land Trust will not seek nor accept public funding. Our funding will come from people like you, who value your liberty, who are opposed to new taxes, and who care about preserving the quality of life that open space brings. We believe that those who share these ideas will contribute generously to the cause of land preservation without being compelled to do so. They will help us prove that the private sector can support such valuable programs without the interference of government, and an ever-increasing tax burden on the American people. The organization is run and administered by volunteers. All of the money collected will be dedicated to the acquisition and protection of open space where it is most needed. |
