play operation: enduring pipeline
description: created a military parody game to emphasize
the futility of trying to win America's War on Terror.
terrorists and normal civilians are indistinguishable
(as in real life) and as they enter the screen on the
right and progress to the left you must stop all terrorists
from exiting on the left (or they use their suitcase
nukes on one of your cities). if you accidentally kill
a civilian, it will enrage nearby witnesses who then
themselves become terrorists.
duties: responsible for all copy, code, music and sound
effects editing. jason
whitley created the designs.
employer: self-promotional
special features:
- 5 level's corresponding to the 'color-coded terror
chart'
- objectives are 'typed' on the screen for the user,
including typos and 'backspacing' that fixes the typos
and retypes them
- timed special events such as 'CIA payoff' (money
rains from sky, all terrorists become civilians),
'carpet bombing' (bombs rain from sky), 'canadian
red cross truck' (in reference to the american's destruction
of canadians as well as a red cross facility, severe
point reduction for hitting it)
- 3 dimensional (simulated) playing surface
- number of houses and caves determined by level,
placement is random. houses can be destroyed, equal
to the death of 5 civilians
- civilians and terrorists can enter caves (anthills),
exist underground, and exit caves in other locations
- weapon 1 the 'laser guided missile' heads in the
direction fired until it nears the ground, then it
veers off in a random direction much to the frustration
of the user
- weapon 2 the 'food packets and cluster bombs' drops
sandwiches, some of which are food (coverts terrorist
to civilian) and some of which are cluster bombs (explodes.)
this is a sarcastic reference to our using small yellow
food packets which very much resembled our small yellow
cluster bombs
- weapon 3 the 'paratrooper' infuriates terrorists
on screen and causes them to launch shoulder-mounted
rockets at the paratrooper, who subsequently dies.
this is one of the only ways that the user can figure
out which are which. terrorists underground will pop
half-out of caves to use rocket launchers (indicating
there are terrorists below ground)
- weapon 4 the 'bunker buster' will destroy everything
below ground, as well as creating a hole in the earth
which people could fall into
- weapon 5 the 'mini nuke' is exactly as it sounds.
total devestation
- the game ends and your inevitably negative score
is tallied, you are given statistics, and you are
assigned 3 Bush administration heads by the 'slot
machine' and words associated with each to create
a visual and verbal representation of how well you
did
- the credits features the song 'United States of
Whatevah' by Sifl
and Olly and scrolls every piece of code used
in the game at such a rapid pace that no one could
possibly read it.
