Tips to make a home more energy efficient

Tips to make a home more energy efficient, according to the Energy Office of Michigan:

_Install an automatic setback thermostat to lower the temperature to 60 degrees at night and when no one is home.

_Set the water heater temperature at 120 degrees.
_Turn down the temperature on the water heater when you leave on vacation.

_Fix leaky or dripping water faucets.

_Clean or replace air filter on the furnace once a month.

_Clear area in front of air vents.

_Put caulk and weather stripping around windows and doors.

_Add a sweep to the bottom of doors to help keep out cold air.

_Install gaskets behind electrical outlet cover plates located on exterior walls
_Install glass doors on fireplaces and keep the flue damper closed when the fireplace is not in use.

_Plant windbreaks to shield a house from the winter wind.

_Look for the Energy Star logo, which shows an item is approved by a government-backed program that sets standards for energy efficiency, when purchasing new windows or a furnace.

_Insulate water pipes to the first horizontal pipe that runs off the water heater or provide heat traps on both cold and hot water lines.

_Insulate all hot water pipes located in unconditioned basements and crawl spaces.

_Install water heater blankets according to the supplier's specifications.

_Install low flow shower heads.

_Place an electric hot water heater on an insulated pad.

_Plug major air leaks, especially in the attic and basement.

_Seal around electrical wire boxes and plumbing cutaways.

_Seal around recessed lighting fixtures, but use caution because insulation should not be placed near lights.

_Caulk around outdoor faucets, wire and pipe holes and where different siding materials meet.
