ENVIRONMENTAL ENHANCEMENT AWARD - 2006

Each year we present our "Environmental Enhancement Award" to an individual, business or organization that we feel has done the most in the past year to improve or protect the environment surrounding the St. Sebastian River area.  This year we have chosen the St. Sebastian River Greenway Plan.  This plan was the "brainchild" of Dr. David Cox who coordinated with various interested parties and shepherded it through the process to successful and eager adoption by the local governmental entities.
The Greenway by itself is only a concept, but it is an acknowledgement that our river is a remarkable natural resource.  In so doing, it gives anyone seeking to protect the river and its habitat an extra advantage in obtaining assistance.  It is also an increased status that declares to all who are not familiar with the river that it is something worth conserving and something worth making the trek to see and enjoy.
While we present this award to David, we would be remiss in not acknowledging the numerous other folks who were involved.  We acknowledge and thank the following who participated in the development and adoption of the St. Sebastian River Greenway - the Indian River County Commissioners, Indian River Land Trust, Marine Resources Council, Pelican Island Audubon Society, Ruth Stanbridge, Sebastian Area Chamber of Commerce and the Sebastian City Council.
Congratulations to Dr. David Cox and thanks to all who made the St. Sebastian River Greenway Plan a reality!

ST. SEBASTIAN RIVER TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

George Flemming once owned most of the property surrounding the St. Sebastian River.  He obtained a land grant from Spain, now referred to as the "Fleming Grant".  The first written record of this grant was in a suit by the US government against heirs of Flemming in 1829.  The heirs of Flemming won the suit and it was established that the grant of 20,000 acres was made to Flemming by the King of Spain on March 29, 1815 for his "…loyalty, patriotism, meritorious services, etc."
