WHAT'S HOT

Well, we can finally report to you that the challenge and suit brought against the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the EPA, by the Clean Water Network of Florida, has been settled.  This challenge was a result of Florida's "Impaired Waters Rule" (IWR) which was developed by the DEP to address the requirements of the Clean Water Act regarding TMDLs (Total Maximum Daily Load).  TMDLs are required by the Clean Water Act to determine the amount of pollutant loading a surface water body is able to assimilate and still meet water quality standards.
The results of the suit are that the EPA determined that Florida's IWR was a change to federal water quality standards and they were required to review Florida's list of impaired waters, restoring several that were removed by the faulty IWR.  Florida was also required to consider data regarding impairment for mercury that the IWR dismissed, and therefore several water bodies were added to its impaired waters list for mercury contamination, requiring the development of TMDLs and the corresponding water quality improvements.
The Friends participated in this challenge with the Clean Water Network and we believe that the outcome was as good as can be expected.  But the Clean Water Network is still monitoring the DEP's efforts to modify the IWR, which they are concerned will still not comply with the Clean Water Act standards.  We thank the Clean Water Network for all of their hard work and for their help, allowing us to play a small part in protecting Florida's waters.

REMEMBERANCE OF JOYCE DEJOIA

Frank DeJoia is one of the founding members of the Friends, one of our longest-term members and staunchest supporters.  We were saddened to learn that his wife Joyce passed away in June.  Frank asked that donations be made to the Friends, in memory of Joyce.  We are very honored by Frank's generosity and want to thank all of those who have sent contributions in Joyce's memory.
Joyce was truly a gracious southern lady and is missed by all her friends and especially family.

NOMINEES REQUESTED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ENHANCEMENT AWARD

This award is given annually by the Friends to an individual or business, that has enhanced the environmental quality of the St. Sebastian River area, by one of the following criteria: 1) Landscaping - using environmentally friendly plants (i.e. mostly natives), or pest plant removal projects; 2) Water quality projects - storm water runoff control, muck removal or pollution reduction (i.e. fertilizers/chemicals, installation of sewers, etc.); 3) Open land conservation - donation or purchase of conservation easement; 4) Erosion control - planting of appropriate plants along vulnerable areas.
If you know of someone or a business in our area that has carried out such a project this year, please let us know.  Look for our application forms at our general meeting, on our website, at our display at select public events, or you can call Anne Putman at 772-388-3666.  Nominations need to be received by October 31st.

FIGURINE AND PAINTING RAFFLES

The Friends have two items that we are raffling to help raise funds for our George Schum Memorial Award.  One is a manatee carving and the other is an original painting of the US 1 bridge spanning the St. Sebastian River - the one that is currently being torn down and replaced.
The manatee carving is approximately one foot in length and is carved of basswood.  It was made by John Saltvedt who is a member of the Sebastian Woodcarvers.  Tickets for the manatee raffle are $1 each or 3 for $2.
The second item is a painting by local resident and Friends member Richard Gillmor.  The framed painting
