'Ballad of the Absent Mare' is pretty much C&W to begin with.

Emmylou Harris just released a highly rated (by the 8 Oct. 1993
_Entertainment weekly,_ among others) album, _Cowgirl's prayer_ (Asylum, 11
tracks), which contains a Leonard Cohen song. Interesting, the song is called
"Ballad of a runaway horse" (TT 5:35)
which apparently is C&Wization of Cohen's
    "Ballad of the absent mare"
from his 1979 _Recent songs._ I've seen the CD in stores but haven't picked up
the CD yet or heard the song on the radio.

I absolutely agree. In fact, it may be the most C&W Cohen song. By
"C&Wization" I was referring to the title. Why was Cohen's poetic "absent
mere"
changed to the prosaic "runaway horse"? Maybe all of these urban C&W fans
don't
know what a "mere" is.
