SUBJECT: Album Info and Lyric Corrections
From: rmura@world.std.com (Ron Mura) 15 Nov 1992
I got from the Leonard Cohen Information Service two other pieces of
Columbia promo material on _The Future_. Both supposedly originate in
the U.S., as does my first one, but the content is very different.

One has the lyrics to the first verse of "Democracy," so I can
correct what I posted:

>It's comin' through a hole in the air,
>From the gnats at Tiannemen(sp?) Square;
From those nights... [My wife and I listened several times
when we first got the promo tape and
tried to get "nights" out of it, but
                          it sounded more like "nyats."]
>It's comin' from the fields
          ...from the feel
>That aren't exactly real,
   That it ain't...
>Or it's real but it ain't exactly there.
>From the war against disorder,
>From the sirens night and day,
>From the fires of the homeless,
>From the ashes of the gay,
>Democracy is coming
>To the U. S. A.

The other promo sheet says that the album was co-produced by Cohen and
Steve Lindsey, and that "also lending a hand in production were Bill
Ginn, Leanne Ungar, Rebecca De Mornay and Yoav Goren. Singing back-up
vocals on numerous tracks is past partiner [sic] Jennifer Warnes."

"Servicing the first single, 'Closing Time' will be via a CD pro
and will be simultaneous with the album release on November 24.
Included will be an edit for radio."

"The video is going to be shot in Toronto in late October and will
be finished in conjunction with album release. Directing are Canadian
award winning video team Curtis Wehrfritz ... and the D.O.P. is
Miroslaw Baszak (Highway 61, Barney Bentail, Roadkill, and 54-40)...."

"Specific target advertising will be done to not only enlarge
LEONARD's audience, but to speak to it directly...."

"Promotions with the numerous programs at the CBC are definitely being
targeted as well as some of the campus mediums. LEONARD has offered
to produce and sign a series of lithographs for promotional use,
featuring his lyrics and artwork. In addition, we will be servicing
radio with an interview disc.... [N]ames like Tom Waits and Iggy Pop
as interviewers have been discussed. Suffice to say that an
appropriate interviewer will be selected to make an absolute unique
interview experience."

"Presently we do not have any confirmations that LEONARD will be
touring, although if the past is any indication, the spring would be a
potential time frame and a full scale national tour is feasible."
