Siyeh Pass
Siyeh Pass is accessed via the Piegan Pass trailhead which is located at
the Siyeh Bend on the Going-to-the-Sun Road - 15 miles west of St Mary and
3 miles east of Logan Pass.
Of the more than 700 miles of trail in the park, few can beat the climb
to Siyeh Pass, an area that boasts some of the Park's most dramatic mountain
landscapes.
From the road, quickly drop down to Siyeh Creek and follow it for a short distance
before entering dense forest.
Start a gentle climb as you traverse a wooded
slope. The trail eases and reaches a trail junction at .5 miles.
Turn left for the Siyeh Pass Junction and continue to climb.
The forest becomes more open as you head north, with barren cliffs on three
sides.
After hiking for 1 mile, cross a wooden bridge and hike through a beautiful
meadow. Piegan Mountain rises on the left as you reach
Siyeh Pass Junction at the 2.5 mile mark. Take the right fork east to Siyeh Pass
which is 2 miles away.
You will find it to be easy walking through meadows surrounded by cliffs.
Cross Siyeh Creek and begin the climb to the pass up a rocky alpine slope.
At 4.5 miles you reach the 7,750-ft pass, where you can look north-east
to the Boulder Creek valley. Continue on switchbacks up the
barren talus of Matahpi Peak.
At 4.8 miles you reach the trail highpoint above the divide of Boulder and Baring
Creeks. Continue past a cairn for the best views.
