Western Cuebid

 

 Western Cue is a treatment used in a contested auction when one partner asks the other partner to bid 3nt if he has a stopper in the suit that the opponents have bid.  

It is a relatively simple and widely used bid that can also be applied when the opponents enter into the auction and your side has game values but no major suit fit.

South opens the bidding 1D. Partner responds 1S. East overcalls 2H. South knows this partnership has game values and bids 3H asking for a stopper in the suit bid by the opponents.

With a solid stopper in Hearts North confidently bids 3nt.

 South opens the bidding 1H.  West overcalls 1S.  North bids 2C here to show a good club suit and decent values. 

South keeps the bidding open by bidding 3S which asks for a stopper in the opponents' suit.  With spades securely stopped North is happy to bid 3nt.
