Dobry den, Slovensko!
Population: 5.4 million. Area: 19,000 square miles (similar to
Massachusetts and New Hampshire combined). Capital: Bratislava. Government:
parliamentary democracy. Latitude: 48 degrees north (similar to Vancouver,
Canada, and Paris, France). Famous for mountain hiking, folk traditions, ice
hockey.
Spis: "speesh." Levoca, "LEH-voh-chah,"
population: 14,604.
On our cross-country trip through Slovakia, we
traveled through the High Tatras Mountains, learned about the Roma (gypsy)
culture, and dropped into the small medieval town of Levoca for lunch. And
then: back on our fall-colored drive into rural Hungary (at right).
