In 1995 Steve Pisarski took over the Varsity coaching position
and had many successful years at the helm. He stepped down after
the 2001 season to concentrate on his head coaching responsibilities
for the Damascus Women's Varsity basketball team. Coach Pisarski
also runs the very successful Best of Maryland National Basketball
tournament each year. During his tenure he led the Warriors to
their best record in school history winning the regional finals,
and advancing to state finals. The team was defeated by a tough
Northern High School squad. But finished 2nd in the state for
the first time in school history.
For the 2002 season Bonnie Gilchrist was named head coach
after stepping down as Athletic Director of Sherwood High School.
She also had been serving as JV coach since 2000. The first season
was a gentle transition for both the players and the new coaching
staff. The team finished 9-5 having a winning season. Sherwood
has developed a strong volleyball program and they continue to
carry on a strong tradition of excellence.
2002
The season began with some changes in Sherwood
volleyball. Steve Pisarski stepped down from head coach after
leading the team since 1995.
The Warriors had a great season posting a 9-5 regular season
record and a 13-6 overall record. The team finished the Annual
Magruder Tournament in 3rd place losing in the semi finals to
Seneca Valley. Monica Martinic was named to the All Tournament
Team. The team featured a squad consisting mostly of juniors
and seniors. Outside hitter Allison LaGasse was selected to the
senior MCPS All-Star tournament team. The Warriors had a productive
winning season and were led by Katie Benson, Liz Dixon, Nicki
Bonebrake, Brooke Mayhew, Lorelie Diestro, Julie Linn, Meredith
Murray, and Kree Halkiotis.
2003
Entering the 2003 season, the team had high hopes
due to their success in 2002 and returning 8 players from the
previous year's varsity squad. Returning were Katie Benson, Monica
Martinic, Liz Dixon, Nicki Bonebrake, Brooke Mayhew, Julie Linn,
Chrysanthi Halkiotis, Lorelie Diestro.
Sherwood started out in a fury posting a 6-1 early season record.
The team then embarked on the toughest part of their schedule
losing to Springbrook, Magruder, Quince Orchard, Churchill, Blair,
Whitman, and Poolesville. Overall, the Warriors finished the
year with a 9-9 overall record and a 6-8 regular season record.
Due to key injuries, the Warriors were without senior all county
setter Monica Martinic for half of the season and middle hitter
Liz Dixon was out with a severe ankle injury from match 1 until
the first playoff match in November. Outside hitter Katie Benson
picked up the setting duties beautifully and the rest of the
team rallied to fill in the voids. The county had many top notch
college level division 1 caliber teams and the competition was
extremely difficult. Three teams from the county made it to the
state finals matches. Katie Benson, Kree Halkiotis and Monica
Martinic were named to the annual senior all star tournament
team.
