Bicycle Hazards in Cambridge

There are several large and dangerous holes and other hazards along the Cambridge/Watertown side of the Paul Dudley White Bicycle Path, most of which have existed for at least two years. These hazards could spell disaster for a cyclist, especially if he/she were carrying a child in a rear bike seat. They are not visible at night, and some block the entire trail and cannot be avoided. When it rains, they look like innocent puddles. They could really cause a serious accident, if they haven't already. I am publishing this web page so that I can make sure that the cities of Cambridge and Watertown and especially the MDC (who maintains these paths) will be aware of these conditions.
Please email me at gasmiley@mediaone.net if you know of any other hazards which you would like to document. Attach a picture, as well as the location. and I will publish it on this page and pass the link on to cycling groups in the area. Thanks in advance. - Gary Smiley

Repaired!

Just outside of Watertown Square (on the Newton side). Big enough to swallow up a bicycle...

Greenough Blvd between Grove St and the Arsenal St Bridge. This had been here for years.

Good news! This hole has been repaired!

Tunnel under the Eliot Bridge at beginning of Greenough Boulevard. This tunnel is always flooded, usually completely.  In addition, the other end of the tunnel contains about 3-4 inches of dirt. I dare anyone to check the bacteria level of this swill.

This is caused by tree roots.
