The curtain or the veil was a thick fabric with no seams. It had the same four colors as the linen covering, white, red, blue and gold. It also had two large Cherubim sewn into it, almost guarding the final entrance. There was only one man allowed past this curtain, and then only once a year, for the Day of Atonement. He would take the blood of the offering from the Altar, and walk into the Holy Place, the first room. Then past the veil, hung by hooks and rings from four gold covered columns. Into the Most Holy PLace, or the Holy of Holies. Here the Blood would be offered., More on that in the last page. (next)
There was no other meaning of this than just a separation from God. Only the blood could buy access past it. The other priests, ministering in the front room could not see past it, except for perhaps some light shining out of that area. The Light of the Presence of the Lord, because there was no artificial light in that place. The people of Israel understood the fear and awe of the Lord and were even comfortable with this separation. Whenever Moses would come from speaking with God. He would come with the Shekanah Glory upon his face. It was so frightening to the Israelites, they requested he wear a veil himself, over his face.
But God had other ideas. He wanted, and showed by this whole tabernacle, a way to reconcile sinful man back to himself. And so if you download the animation I have made about this, you will see something that took place in the Temple of Solomon, in the days of Jesus. (The Temple was a fancy, permanent, reproduction of the Tabernacle, built by Solomon in Jerusalem, many years after all this) In the animation you will see the curtain, the veil parted in two, torn not by man from the bottom to the top, but at the death of the Messiah, and the payment for man's sins being made in FULL, the veil rent from TOP to BOTTOM by the Lord Himself. When Jesus said "It is finished!" The scene in the Temple played out, then the Holy of Holies was bared for ALL to see, and access was made for all who would believe, to come to relationship with the Father; the One true God.
