The Scorpion

Everybody has that one definitive kit that stands out amongst the rest. For me, it was the Jayco Scorpion, beautifully sculpted by Mark Van Tine.

This kit was pretty rough, so some heavy clean-up was required. I ended up sanding with Emery boards instead of a Dremel because I felt I had better control with those to shape all the lost detail back in.

Another photo.....Some of the offset mold lines were over an 1/8"

Once everything was cleaned up, assembly was pretty basic. I like using large threaded rod for pinning. That’s my Tim Taylor mentality showing……anything less just feels insufficient.

A close up

I haven’t worked on a model for a couple years now, so I was a little nervous, but it all came back like riding a bike. I left the kit in sub-assemblies for painting and started with a base coat of Delta Ceramcoat White and then Folk Art Bright Green. I then mixed the Bright Green base with some Americana Citron Green and sprayed a wide loose pattern over the highlighted areas, gradually getting tighter as I added more and more of the Citron Green and then eventually adding some white.

I used Delta Ceramcoat Black Green for all the recessed areas and then went over everything again with the basecoat color to blend it all in. The boots, gloves and shorts were done in a mixture of Delta Dark Foliage Green and Folk Art Licorice.

The etched lines all over him had to be painted by hand, unlike Spidey web lines, which can be done with a gel pen, these were thinner and had to be painted in with a liner brush and then wiped down with wet Q-tips every couple millimeters.

A couple cans of Testers Dull Cote later....and we were good to go!
