museum after her death). Because the original device was misspelled "Marion" this
was remade for mail back service with the spelling of "Marian."

Here is the story behind the design of this pictorial
postmark. An artist named Caravaggio drew a painting called "The
Calling of Saint Matthew," in the 1500’s. A statue was made based on the images
in that painting and presented to the local church and dedicated on this date.
The images in the postmark are from a pen and ink drawing of this statue. The
figures and the left are so busy picking up coins that they are ignoring Jesus
and St Peter on the right. Those on the left are St Matthew and his associates.

The Pony Express ride was on November 11 and Gilbert Days was
on November 18 but there was no special postmark on that date. Also the device

"Holidays" may not show. The stamp was affixed about two inches to the left of

PONY EXPRESS RIDE
RE-ENACTMENT
On December 3rd there was a pony express ride re-enactment in
Texas and the towns through which it passed had a pictorial postmark. On November
10 there was also a special postmark for Swearing-in Ceremony for the riders in
San Antonio. The design for all of these showed a pony express rider on
horseback, with a mailbag, passing a tall cactus. It read, "The Pony Express
Ride." Some of these also had a circular logo showing the Alamo and reading,
