During many years my brother Daniel Lavaine Worth traveled throughout the southeastern United States visiting courthouses, churches, archives , and other sources of information, trying to trace our ancestors back as far as he could. During trips to the British Islands and Europe he tried to trace them even further. The results of those trips is a mass of information. Using all this information he wrote several narratives about the various names in our background. In addition to the Worth and Solomon surnames, he found out much about the names Cato, Chaney, Lott, Peterson, Sapp, and Winn. I am including those narratives as links. Our sister Iva Worth Yeager was a source of information and inspiration.
First I include a picture from around 1920 of our mother and father, Dan Worth and Mae Solomon Worth.
The articles by Dan are:
My Cato Ancestors 67K My Chaney Ancestors 4K
My Lott Ancestors 100K My Peterson Ancestors 45K
My Sapp Ancestors 9K My Winn Ancestors 18K
My Solomon Ancestors 257K My Worth Ancestors 279K
The following three articles are recent ( January 1999 ) and are excerpted from sources described in the articles.
My Worth And Sapp Ancestors - Addendum
My Worth Ancestors - Addendum 2
My Worth Ancestors - Addendum 3
These articles are .txt files. To convert them to html files would lose the special form Dan used in posting family lines
My son John Worth has searched out information about our ancestors who served during the Civil War on the side of the Confederacy. Here is his article (clipart added by me ).
John also is constructing his own web site about these same
names. Go to Georgia Roots
Gateway .
(This site also contains information about his mother's ancestors. )
During my research I was struck by how little I know about my ancestors. Because I didn't want that to be true about me I have constructed a memoir of my childhood years in south Georgia. Here is that article: Memories
Upon reading Dan's Worth article one finds that there was some question about our family actually being McClelland instead of Worth. Dan felt that he had laid the question to rest , but I had seen evidence that led me ultimately to do DNA tesing on myself and a known descendant of William L. Worth. Those results did confirm the Worth surname. Check out the WorthDNA Project .
Three pictures from Dan's travels are included as links.
It is well founded that the family had settled ( in Worth House ) before the end of the 11th century, taking its name from the ancient estate of Worth near Tiverton in County Devon, England. Click the image to see a larger version.
In 1985 a new version of the Worth House built, owned, and occupied by Mr. Thomas John Birett and containing some timbers and windows from the old house was seen. Mr. Birett gives color photos of his version of Worth House to descendents that visit. Click the image to see a larger version.
The Worth family crest - hangs in the Tiverton Museum. Click the image to see a larger version.
I have added a page of old
family photos ( Under Construction )

any of the surnames, please contact Gene Worth
Dan passed away February 2, 2004 at the age of
eighty-three. He is buried in Broxton City Cemetery, in south Georgia.
