We were promised  good WX by the WX man for March 2, 2008.  The coin was flipped correctly. It was good WX.  It was cold Sunday morning  in the high 30s and low 40s when I picked up Howard Rasmussen, University Place, WA at about 7:30AM. There was a light breeze.  This was the first regatta of  the Gig harbor Model Yacht Club 2008 season.  As a consequence my rig was really loaded up with all of our club gear: 8  marks and rack,  boat oars,  wind sock,  and other paraphernalia along with two boats, sails,  transmitters, tool kits, radio gloves, etc., etc. Well, you get the idea. We were loaded.

We arrived at Johnnie’s  at Fife, for breakfast,  at about 8:15PM  Chappy Chapman, Tacoma and Roland Krona, Gig Harbor were there.  We left for the lake at about 9:15PM. The gear was being unloaded from the car when  Harry Lange, Enumclaw,

Joe D’Amico, Jack Ronda,  Rudy, Sequim arrived.  Soon after Bob Corbett, Milton arrived.

The marks were put out by Joe D and Jack Ronda.  Thanx, guys. They really enjoy putting marks out at Surprise Lake because  it is probably 200x larger than their pond.   The start /finish line was set up with an E/W line. The wind was from the S and SW  at 5-8mph with gusts to 14mph.  The first heat started at 10:30AM. With the good breezes that we had  we sailed  14 heats.

Murphy was most assuredly present. We started off in fine style. When all of the gear and boats were being taken down to the dock  my sail rig was blown off the dock and the jib was lost.  As a consequence I did not sail my boat.  I did sail Howard R’s boat for a few heats.  Amazingly, there were no breakdowns considering that this was the first regatta of the year and we had some good breezes.

Roland K did not sail his boat since it was all dismantled  to paint it.  Roland could not get it put back together for the regatta because he is having difficulty with his hands because of Carpal tunnel problems.  I told Roland to bring his boat anyway and we would put it together for him.  Howard R is presently  putting it back together.  Bob Corbett had to leave the regatta before the last heat so he was last in the placing.

This turned out to be a great  “opening day”  for GHMYC  with fine sailing WX and a large skipper turn out.  Thanks all for making this a first regatta success.

The last heat was sailed at 1PM.  Gary K and Harry L  picked up the marks, put the boat and gear away. Thanx, guys. After the gear was put away we went to A’s for lunch.
