ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING & PIZZA BASH FEB. 5, 2005

The festivities were held at Joe and Anne Brohan's pad in University Place, WA. The way things worked out we had enough room for all the participants so no one had to sit on the floor! Ah! Did we ever luck out on that.

All in all it was a great turn out. There were some skippers that I expected to show, but alas I did not see the whites of their eyes. They missed out on a great time. Skippers and one First Mate started to arrive about noon time. We gathered in the living room and shot the breeze for a while.

As for the skippers that came we all had a pleasant surprise with one arrival, Tom Jordin, of EC12 Puritan/Standard Hull fame. It's been a long time that we had seen Tom J. Tom says that he is now presently finished with this out-of town stuff and expects to be here a while. That means, as far as he knows, that we'll be seeing him on the water this '05 Sailing Season.

Another surprise was Steve Young whom we've not seen much of these past 5 years all due to the fact that he's been incarcerated in the Graveyard Shift. However, he then informed us that he now has a normal work shift. It'll be great working normal pleasant hours so that he can do some of these fun things with the daytime people.

Other skippers that showed were Gary Kohler, Keyport, Harry Lange, Enumclaw, Bud Pell, Poulsbo, Kelly Martin, Gig Harbor, me, Joe Brohan, University Place, and Howard and Neva Rasmussen, University Place. After we had confabbed and shot the breeze for a while

the Papa Murphy pizzas were tossed into the oven and then the pizza bash started. Guess we had figured out correctly, because with three large family pizzas we ended up with only two slices left over. We had lotsa soft drinks to wash it down along with coffee.

Dessert, of course, was also on the menu. It ended up being a Birthday Cake for Birthday Boy Howard R. His birthday was the day before, but we celebrated belatedly. A great time was had over that. Howard R was ceremoniously serenaded. After dessert was satisfactorily disposed of the ABM was called to order Feb. 5, 2005 1:40PM by Commodore Gary Kohler.

Order of business was:

I The election of Officers for 2005:

bulletHarry Lange elected Commodore by unanimous vote
bulletJoe Brohan reelected Vice Commodore by unanimous vote (more volunteer than anything else)
bulletJoe Brohan reelected Treas/Secty(more volunteer than anything else)

Other business was the '04 Financial Report by Joe Brohan. The GHMYC was reported as financially healthy. At the same same time Joe B felt that it would be wise to levy a dues fee of $25.00 for year 2005 to keep the club financially sound. At the same time then it would be OK to forego dues for '06 by then registered club members; however, new members would be paying $25.00 dues.

Motion was made as stated above, was seconded and carried. It was at this time that dues were collected from 7 members.

II Matters involving Racing Rules & Instructions

bulletBarging was brought up: Kelly M pointed out that this is already covered in the RR&I. To absolve oneself of this must sail back around an end mark. Kelly M to check further into the ramifications of "barging."
bulletThrow outs was discussed: Only throw out not allowed was DSQ.
bulletBoard showing course: RR&I requires posting of same at regatta. Howard R. will prepare metal board and Harry Lange magnetic markers to show course.
bulletRR&I readily available: Copies will be available at regattas and posted on the GHMYC Website.
bulletRecruiting new members: This is an ongoing task. In actuality, prospects need to be cultivated (reminder contacts, invitations to witness regattas, take the tiller, etc) this, of course, is after they have been exposed to the hobby in the first place. Therein lies the problem. Since our present venue is at a private lake that restricts the exposure to the public. Consequently, to start the '05 season off on the correct foot, we'll be holding our First Promo regatta at "other lakes" as signified in the schedule explanations.

It was decided to hold the Promo Regatta at Wapato Lake, Tacoma, WA at 72nd & Alaska (two blocks E of I-5)

April 9, 2005 at 10AM. We, obviously, will not have the rescue boat with us to do as it is named or place the marks. Harry L

said that he'd bring his remote launch to place the marks and rescue boats (hopefully not needed).

Also, to help promote the Promo Regatta an ad will be placed in the News Tribune to make the public announcement.

bulletEntry level boats for new members was discussed. Other classes were suggested. However, Joe B raised the point that "dilution of the classes" too many classes) leads to fragmentation of the club interest. Consequently, we felt that we should stick to the ODOM as a fine entry level boat, both for ease of handling, simple set up, reasonably simple assembly and reasonable cost.

The meeting ended more visiting was done and then skippers started to head for their "home ports" 3:30-4:00PM. This was the close of a satisfying BM and pizza bash, I think! I've heard no complaints so far.
