ODOM 2

APRIL 15, 2007

The WX promised to be good for sailing when I, Joe Brohan) , University Place, WA went to pick up Howard Rasmussen, also of University Place, WA. It was great seeing Howard waiting for me with his ODOM and gear. He has not been out and about since the first of the year. He has been having a terrible bout with the shingles. They ain’t no fun and they have not been for him. He is finally feeling better and hopefully they are about to leave the scene.

We arrived at Johnny’s at Fife at about 8AM for skippers breakfast. Roland Krona, Gig Harbor, WA was there waiting for us. Chappy Chapman, Tacoma, WA and Gary Kohler, Keyport, WA showed up a short time later. Later, we arrived at the lake at about 9:15AM. Gary K put out the marks and the rest of us got the gear out and swept some of the goose poop off the dock. Actually, I think that it was more duck stuff. I have not seen many of the resident geese around lately. Maybe they’ve gone someplace else to bother other skippers.

Gary set up a N/S and E/W start/finish lines. The winds were from the S, SW, N and NW at about 1-5mph  and gusts to 8mph. Temps were in the mid 50s.  We were hoping that Jack Ronda and Joe D’Amico of Sequim would show up. They did not. Too bad because it was good sailing weather. The starting gun went off at about 10AM with the course to the S and around the marks. Later, the wind shifted and we sailed to the N and later to the W. We also did some windward/leeward heats.

There were no mishaps other than a few incidents of boats running into the dock. Fortunately there was no boat damage.

Howard R did well and I was surprised that he did not feel the effects of being on his feet for 2+ hours. Must be he is getting better since he did not have any bad effects the next day. Must be he is getting better. Apparently being off ill for all of this time has not effected his sailing prowess. He did well on the placing.

Speaking of getting better, but not in regard to health, Roland K did great in the regatta. He did not have a high finish placing, but he did have some GREAT heats. Roland has a tendency to minimize those high placings. We continually remind him that Rome was not built in a day and it’ll take time to get consistently better. As it was he had a 1st, 2nd  and 3rd !  Keep it up Roland! You’re getting there! There is light at the end of the tunnel!

We sailed our 10th and last heat about 12:15PM. Gary picked up the marks and put the gear away. Thanx, Gary for putting ‘em out and bringing ‘em in. We went to Mr. A’s for lunch and figured the scoring. It was a good day sailing and we all had a great time.
