Nov. 11, 2002 was the date for the Rotten Pumpkin Regatta, the last regatta of the 2002 sailing season. The day before was not very promising for a good sailing day on Sunday. It was rainy and blustery. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised when I was greeted with blue sky, no rain and scattered clouds on Sunday morning. The temp was in the low 40s with light breezes. I went to meet with some of the skippers at Noel's for breakfast at about 8AM.
When we got to the lake, Jesse Touhey, Port Angeles was there and had already put up the skippy barriers. Also present at the regatta was Howard Rasmussen, University Place; Mikey Pearson, Gig Harbor; Bud Pell, Poulsbo; Harry Lange, Enumclaw; Joe Brohan, Puyallup and Ken Pawlicki, Tacoma. By the time the starting gun went off at 10AM, we had S-SW winds at 1-3mph. with blue skies and temps in the 40s. Later in the morning, at about 11AM winds started to pick up from 5-10mph with gusts to 15mph, Very exciting at the starts. The course that was set up did not have to be changed during the regatta. The winds were basically steady with the occasional gusts and sudden shifts that would cause some problems. Ergo the name Surprise Lake. It makes sailing there a challenge.
There were no mishaps during the regatta. However, misfortune had followed Ken to the lake. The transmitter that had become soaked in a regatta at Lk Washington, Coulon Pk., Renton, WA, did not function properly so Ken was not able to sail "Rival." That was unfortunate since this was the last regatta. However, Ken helped out and checked the starting line and finish line and recorded the placing. Thanx for the assist, Ken. Racing was completed by 12:15PM with eleven heats that would give us two throw outs. Mike picked up the marks and put the boat to bed. Joe Brohan took all of the gear except the oars and radio, to be kept for the winter months. Some of the skippers retired to the Milton Tav for something to eat and compute the scores. This capped off a great sailing day and was a perfect way to cap off the 2002 sailing season. Placing was as follows:
1) Mikey Pearson 9
2)Joe Brohan 19
3) Howard Rasmussen 26
4)Jesse Touhey 29
5)Harry Lange 42
6)Bud Pell 51
