DAFFODIL REGATTA APRIL 1, 2007
The day before the Daffodil Regatta of April 1, 2007, the forecast for the WX was that there was cold air heading south from Canada. Along with this, it was predicted that there would be some rain. Most probably in the convergence zone somewhere north of Everett/Marysville. This sounded good. I anticipated good WX for the regatta. At the same time I sent an email to the EC12 skippers about the regatta and there would be a skippers breakfast at Johnny’s at Fife
I was up and about at 6AM. As was predicted, the temp was 34F(my neighbor’s roof was white), broken overcast and a light breeze. Looked good to me. I headed for Johnny’s at Fife for breakfast. No one showed for breakfast. I arrived at the lake at about 9AM. It was great sailing WX. The breeze was from the S and SW at about 5-8mph and with broken clouds. At this time the temp was at about 42F. I pulled into the parking lot just as another car pulled in also.
It was Gerry Cobley with whom I had been emailing. Kelly Martin had replied to Gerry Cobley’s email re his inquiry regarding sailing at Surprise Lake and Kelly had copied to me. I subsequently called Gerry on his cell. I told him that we had a boat for him to sail. Gerry hails from The Triangle MYC, Raleigh, NC and was in our area visiting his daughter.
We walked down to the dock and showed him our lake while waiting for the other skippers to show. It was a cold wind blowing so we sat in my car and talked about RC sailing and our club, etc, etc. The next thing we know it is 10:15AM . Still no skippers had arrived. We waited until 10:25AM and left.
I had apologized that we did not have a regatta for him to sail in especially since he had driven all the way down from the University District, Seattle. This was especially so since he is not familiar with this area. Needless to say I was very embarrassed! I hope that this does not happen to me again! It was not fun. What an impression that must have made on him. I can just hear him recounting his experience with the GHMYC to The Triangle MYC skippers! It is ironic that the only other skipper that showed was from Raleigh, NC 3500 miles to the East. C’est la vie!
