EC12 SUMMER’S END REGATTA AUG. 5, 2007
Awakening Sunday morning and seeing the heavy overcast would not be too promising for things to come for some. However, referring to my Oregon Scientific WX forecaster, hanging on my kitchen wall, predicted overcast and partly sunny. That is usually indicative of the sunny conditions later in the afternoon after the marine effect burns off.
I picked up Howard Rasmussen, University Place, WA at about 7:45AM. Neither Howard or I brought our EC12 boats. Howard no longer has a 12m. The logistics are very difficult packing around a 20-22# hull and gear when one gets older. As for my 12m, it is still in drydock to be painted and gear replaced. I am no longer sailing the club boat, RIVAL, since we just chartered it to Chappy Chapman.
We went to Johnny’s at Fife for skippers’ breakfast. Soon Chappy Chapman, NE Tacoma, WA and Gary Kohler, Keyport, WA showed. After swapping stories and such we headed for the lake. When we arrived at the lake we were greeted by marks being placed by Jerry Snowbird Muridge, NE Tacoma, WA. Also at the lake was Steve Young, Tacoma, WA.
Jerry set up the start/finish line with a right angle N/S and E/W with the winds from the W and SW at 5-7mph with gusts to 12mph. Jerry set up a triangular course. The starting gun went off at about 10:15AM. We sailed windward/leeward and triangular courses. Some courses were with sausage.
Fortunately, there were no break downs other than a sheeting problem with Gary K’s boat. Heats sailed quickly with our brisk breezes and we finished our 14 heats by 12:30PM. We went to Mr. A’s for a bite to eat. As we headed to the restaurant Steve Young picked up the marks and put the boat away. Thanx, Steve, that was great.
Only one problem. We always lock the combo lock while we are there so that the lock is not stolen. That has happened before. Anyway, as it so turns out, I get home about 3:30PM and get a call from Steve Young. He proceeds to tell me that he went to lock up the gear, but did not have the combo to the lock so could not lock up the gear. Soooooo, back to lake I go to lock up the box, praying that nothing would be stolen. Fortunately, nothing was. I locked it up and then returned home. That was a 1 1/2 hour trip and 30 miles of extra driving. You can be sure that Steve, in the future, will have the lock code.
