16 Sep, '02, 19:56 FALL BINNACLE 9-8-02 We had looked forward to the Fall Binnacle at Surprise Lake on Sunday Sept.
8, 2002 with the anticipation that we would have a large group participating. As it so turned out that this was not the case. However, as
the old saw says "don't look a gift horse in the mouth." In this case,
instead of us having a "solid"(?) 11-12 skippers attending, as I had
anticipated, we had 7, so at least, it was over 50% of my projection. The day
started out at Mr. A's for skippers breakfast at about 8AM with sunbreaks and
very light breezes. By the time that we arrived at the lake it was 9:15AM. Jesse
Touhey, from Pt. Angeles had gone directly to the lake, launched the club boat,
gotten the marks out and had set up the "Skippy Barrier" to prevent
skippers from walking off the end of the dock while in deep concentration
sailing the boats(The "Skippy Barrier" is named after Skip Cole who
had walked off the end of the dock on two occasions before I put a stop to it.
Admittedly, tho, I had also walked off the end of the dock twice and have the
"Deep Six" Award to prove it!). Attending the regatta were Jesse
Touhey, Pt. Angeles, Bud Pell, Poulsbo, Mikey Pearson, Gig Harbor, Howard
Rasmussen, University Place, Art Smith, who did not sail but did a great job as
RD, Jerry Murridge, Tacoma(the snowbird from Phoenix), Joe Brohan, local and
Gary Kohler, Bellevue. The regatta got underway at 10:15AM. As I had stated
previously, the winds were light, but as the morning wore on the breezes picked
up to 2-4mph with gusts to 5-6mph. Wind direction was fro the NW, E and finally
settled down to the SW. Fortunately, things went better for Gary Kohler this time around than it did
on last Tuesday Nite(9-3-02) when Gary was going around the course like a spiral
doing 360šs and was not due to his lack of sailing prowess. Not as frustrating
this time around as last time was it, Gary? Thank God for little favors! As we sailed into the later morning hours the sky started to cloud up and we
started to get some sprinkles. It was kinda like the "warning shot over the
bow", so to speak. Consequently, we shortened up the course so that we
could get in enough races to get two throwouts. By 1PM the marks were picked up,
the boat put away, gear stored in our gear box and we left for the Milton Tavern
for lunch. All in all it was a good sailing day and a good time was had by all.
However, there was one unhappy incident that befell Mikey Pearson who had a cell
phone in his jacket pocket. While leaning over the dock edge, to make
adjustments to his boat, the cell phone, yes you guessed it, took a dive into
Surprise Lake! Life's embarrassing and frustrating moments! Fortunately, I had
one with me 'cause Mikey needed the phone for his line of work. Placing in the
