St. Pete Scorer for Opti's
It was what we had hoped for, but only time would tell. The topographic layout and our location here in the State of Washington causes the WX folks a lot of consternation. It’s the Olympic Coast range that separates those North flowing winds near the Washington Oregon border. As a consequence, there is one North flow going up the I-5 Corridor to Everett of North of Seattle and the other flow North along the Pacific coast to the Straits of Juan de Fuca(between Washington State and Vancouver Is.), then East to Everett. This is our famous or infamous convergence zone, whichever term you wish to chose. The convergence zone really mixes it up with the East winds and North winds colliding near Everett. Fortunately, we are about 70 miles South of that area, and sometimes we are lucky when the bad WX dances around us. As a consequence, due to the good WX that we had been experiencing for the previous week we had a great sailing day for ODOM 6.
I, Joe Brohan, University Place, WA picked up Howard Rasmussen, UP and we arrived at Johnny’s at Fife at about 8AM for skippers’ breakfast. Roland Krona, Gig Harbor, WA was already there. “Chappy” Chapman, Tacoma, WA showed up later and also Harry Lange, Enumclaw, WA. We arrived at the lake at about 9AM. Jerry ”Snowbird” Muridge, Tacoma, WA was already there and had set out the marks. Thanx, Jerry. By this time the WX was pretty well set. The skies were blue, temps were in the high 60’s F and the winds were from the North 5-6mph with gusts to 12mph. As it so turned out the temps ended up in the high 70’sF at the end of the regatta.
The starting gun went off at 10:15AM and we sailed a windward/leeward course, twice around and also all of the marks three marks and sausage. As it warmed up in the morning the thermal breezes increased and became more consistent. There were few breakdowns. Howard R had a problem with his main sheet and harry L also had some sheet problems. However, all in all, it was a problem free regatta. There were times that the ODOMs were really moving with the boats trying to plane, trying to submarine sometimes, water coming over the deck and there were some heavy contacts. I was not aware of the damage I had until I arrived home. It was at that time that I discovered that I had a heavy blow on the starboard side of the boat(the other boat on my starboard!) about 2 inches below the gunnel. I was hit hard enough to splitter the gel coat and epoxy resin and separate the fiberglas strands. It is about the size of a nickel. Fortunately, it was not below the water line.
We sailed 15 heats because of the good winds. . All in all it was a great sailing day. We stopped sailing at about 12:15PM. Thanx Harry L for rounding up the marks and putting the boat and gear away. We then headed for Mr. A’s for lunch and figure the scoring. We all left for home about 2:30PM. This was except for Harry L who had to go to work(a very unfeeling boss!) when we went to Mr. A’s for lunch.
There was a tie for 4th and 5th place between Roland K and Chappy C. Chappy had more 2nds than Roland so Chappy C took 4th and Roland K 5th. Harry L with 35 points beat me by 1 point at 36.
