ODOM PTS. NITE APRIL 25, 2006
Howard Rasmussen and I, Joe Brohan, both of University Place, WA arrived at the lake at about 5PM. Other skippers there were Gary Kohler, Keyport, WA, Harry Lange, Enumclaw, WA., Bob Corbett, Milton, WA., Kelly Martin, Gig Harbor, WA and Leon Chapman, Port Orchard, WA (who bought Art Smith's "Square Knot") .
It was a warm sunny evening with winds from all around the Compass Rose 0-3mph. Gary K set the marks with a N/S and E/W start/finish lines to handle the erratic wind directions. Thanx for setting out the marks, Gary. It was a drifter kinda nite. Temps were in the mid 60sF. He set up windward/leeward and triangular courses to cover all eventualities.
The starting gun went off at 6:15PM on a windward/leeward course. Experiencing drifters with the ODOM is not the most exciting experience since this class just loves to have lee helm with light breezes.. However, at the same time, it was a challenge. Fortunately, so as not to add to the mix, there were no failures or breakdowns.
Leon Chapman, who prefers to be called Chappy, did very well placing in some of the heats for his first regatta and getting the feel of things.
Surprisingly, considering the very light breezes that we had and adjusting the windward/leeward courses, we were able to sail 7 heats by 8:30PM. It was just starting to get dark. Harry L rounded up the marks and put the gear away. Thanx, Harry.
We headed for the Tav for a bite to eat and figure out the placing. We all headed for "homeport" about 9:30PM.
The placing was very close with only a 1 point spread between 3rd, 4th and 5th!
