ODOM POINTS NITE, MAY 23, 2006

Howard Rasmussen and I, Joe Brohan, University Place, WA arrived at Surprise Lake, at about 5PM. Soon after we arrived Gary Kohler, Keyport, WA, Bob Corbett, Milton, WA and Harry Lange, Enumclaw, WA arrived. The WX was overcast skies with winds from the N, S and SW at 5-8mph with few gusts and were relatively steady. Good sailing WX !

Gary K set the marks, and advisedly from past experience with Surprise Lake winds, set up a right angle N/S E/W start finish line along with windward/leeward and triangular courses. The starting gun went off at about 6:10PM. We started out sailing only windward/leeward courses so that we could get more heats in during the evening. However, as the evening wore on and we had sailed 8 heats by 7:30PM, we decided to sail some triangular courses. This we did and sailing to the windward mark was great with 6+mph winds making the ODOMs scoot right along. It's such a pleasure sailing when the breezes are the proper speed and are consistent. That usually is not in the scheme of things and is a pleasure when it does happen.

It was at 8:30PM that we had sailed 14 heats. This is indicative of the good winds that we had. Gary K rounded up the marks and locked up the gear. Thanx Gary.

The regatta went reasonably well with few mishaps, though Murphy reared his ugly head. On the 6th heat Bob C's main sheet broke and could not be jury rigged. It needed to be restrung. Bob C retired from the regatta. However, this was not the end of unforeseen events. It seems that there was an over-abundance of "docksterone." It seems that Howard R ran into the dock as he was bringing it in for an adjustment. While all this was goin' on, another skipper, who should have learned about this by now, namely me, Joe Brohan, was not paying attention, and guess what, into the dock I go. Been there. Done that. Some people are REALLY slow learners. Anyway, in comes the boat, I realign my jib swivel hook and continued to race.

We went to the Tav for a bite to eat and figured the placing. There was a battle between 1st and 2nd with only a 1 point spread. We headed for home at about 9:30PM.
