St. Pete Scorer for Opti's
EC12 POINTS NITE JUNE 13, 2006
The WX was an iffy situation all day long and as the late afternoon approached I wondered how the evening sailing would be. I felt that discretion was a better part of valor so I planned on taking some rain gear. By late afternoon we had some high breezes as those heavy dark clouds were racing by. So, by the time that I, Joe Brohan, picked up Howard Rasmussen, ( both from University Place, WA) it really did not look too promising. However, we just had to approach the evening WX with a positive attitude. Hopefully, we figured that our raingear would act as a good hex against any bad WX.
Howard and I arrived at the lake at about 5PM. Already there were Joe Oczkewicz, Port Orchard, WA, Gary Kohler, Keyport, WA, Steve Young, Tacoma, WA, Jerry "Snowbird" Muridge, Mesa, AZ, Ronald Krona, Gig Harbor, WA and Chappy Chapman, NE Tacoma. Jerry M was making his Grand Entrance for the Season sailing with us for the first time in ’06.
Chappy and Ronald do not have EC12s so they helped out with other duties. Chappy put out the marks and rounded them up with all of the gear at the end of the regatta and Ronald helped sweeping up some of the goose goop. Thanx for the help, Chappy.
When the starting gun went off, it was 6PM with Howard R doing the honors as the RD. Thanx, Howard! The winds were 3-4 mph with gusts to 5mph from the S and SW. The temps were in the high 50sF. We started out with a windward/leeward course to the S. Clouds seemed to be breaking up a little and it was getting lighter to the W. ‘Maybe, if we are lucky we won’t get rained on’, we hoped.
We were into the 3rd heat when Harry Lange, Enumclaw, WA arrived. Seems that his boss was not too understanding and Harry had to stay at work until 5:30PM. C’est la vie, Harry. Your day will come and you’ll finally be able to say ‘I’m outta here!’
As the evening wore on, and we got in a number of heats, we started to do some triangular courses with some sausage. The breezes helped to move the heats along and we were able to get in 11 heats by 8PM. As it turned out we had no breakdowns and there was only a 1 point spread between 1st and 2nd place.
I have to congratulate Joe O for how well he is doing. He is a new skipper just starting out with the EC12 and is doing very well. Both he and Gary K had the same points, but Joe O had more higher placings so finished ahead of Gary. Keep it up, Joe!
After the gear and boat were put away we went to the Tav for a bite to eat and figure the scoring. So, as it so turned out we did not get rained on; good breezes continued through the regatta and we even ended up with some blue sky!
We all headed for home port about 9:30PM after a great evening of sailing.
Joe Brohan
