St. Pete Scorer for Opti's
ODOM POINTS NITE JUNE 27, 2006
It seems that we are now into our Summer WX mode. We’ve been having some gorgeous WX. It has been hot, at times, but we’ll take all that we can get ‘cause when Winter is here we’ll be thinking of those warm balmy days.
Howard Rasmussen picked me up, Joe Brohan, at about 4PM and we arrived at the lake at about 5PM. Both of us live in University Place, WA so we switch driving. When we arrived at the lake skippers already there were Gary Kohler, Keyport, WA, Jerry Snowbird Muridge, NE Tacoma, "Chappy" Chapman, NE Tacoma, Harry Lange, Enumclaw, WA and Roland Krona, Gig Harbor, WA.
Roland K just bought an ODOM from Harry L. Howard R had worked on it to sail and Roland picked it up this evening. However, the winds were blowing a fairly good clip and we did not feel that Roland would feel very comfortable sailing the ODOM in these conditions. He did sail it before the race but did not sail in competition. He felt that when he gets more time handling the boat then he’ll feel better about being in competition. Since he did not sail he kept the scoring for us. Thanx Roland.
Chappy C put out the marks oriented to the S & SW breezes with the start/finish line oriented for a N/S start finish. He set up triangular and windward/leeward courses. Thanx, "Chappy." Breezes were from the S & SW at 6-8mph with gusts to 15mph and temps in the low 80sF with clear skies and bright sun.
We started sailing at about 6:15PM. It was great sailing with those breezes and it really tested the set ups on the boats. We did not have much equipment failure other than Harry R having some servo problems and was not able to sail the 10th and 11th heats. Also, "Chappy" had some electrical problems because of water. He did not sail heats 8-11. Howard R did not start the first heat because of difficulty setting up the boat. We were able to sail 11 heats by 7:30PM.
I’m surprised that Howard R was able to sail the number of heats that he did because of the water that he got in the boat. He must have drained at least 2-3 cups of water from the hull. Actually, maybe he should have been disqualified because of having shifting ballast!!! Ha! Ha! It’s a wonder that the boat did not quit on him with all of that water. I was fortunate and had only about 1/2 a cup of water.
Harry L and Roland K rounded up the marks, locked up the boat and put the gear away. Thanx, guys! We then went to the Tav to figure the placing and have a bite to eat. We left the Tav for home at about 9:30PM.
Howard R and I were sailing closely all thru the regatta and in the end Howard R did me in by 2 points. He finished 2nd and I 3rd.
Joe Brohan
