USAACS EASILY SUBDUE CAMP MEADE WARRIORS
Ambulance Eleven Defeats Rivals 20 to 14 and Claim Service Laurels .
CAUGHEY WINS CONTEST
Touchdown in Third Period One More Than Welch Managed to Tally.
Reading, Pa., Nov. 24. -- Over 9000 spectators saw the United States Army Ambulance Corps eleven triumph over the Camp Meade officers' team, 20 to 14, here, this afternoon. In winning today's contest the "Usaacs" lay claim to the football championship of the enlisted service.
The cold, wintry blasts from the northwest chilled one to the bone and had a tendency to cause a lot of fumbling, which marked the game. The first period ended without a score, but the Ambulance team eleven ran up 13 points in the second period on two touchdowns by Cramer and a goal kicked by "Jack" Dunn. In the second half Lieutenant "Silent" Clarke made a number of substitutions. Caughey, who went in at fullback, crossed the line for a touchdown in the third period. This ended the scoring for the "Usaacs." In the fourth period, Welch, the former Carlisle Indian star, scored twice through tackle after advancing the ball on end runs and forward passes. Shortley successfully kicked the first goal, while Welch scored the second goal from touchdown.
After losing their first two games to Fordham and Pennsylvania State, Coach Clark [sic] took charge of the team, and but 21 points have been scored against the "Usaacs," 14 of which we4re in today's contest, the other 7 being made by Conshohocken. The Ambulance team in those games scored a total of 223 points.
Reading declared a half-holiday for the big military event, while excursion trains were run here from Allentown, Pottstown, Pottsville, Lancaster and Lebanon. The olive drab and khaki predominated. The game being for the soldiers' benefit, it was given the unanimous support of the Reading people. The spacious grandstand was filled to its capacity, while the west and south stands, used as the cheering stands for the two armies of rooters, were also packed. The Ambulance Corps, numbering close to 1000 men, motored to the scene in big Army trucks. The Usaacs occupied the west stand and, with their band of 64 men, sang songs and did a lot of cheering. The Camp Meade rooters were in the south stand, and they too, urged on their team, but were outnumbered. The Black bear, the mascot of the Ambulance Corps, was loudly cheered as he was brought on the field at the head of the Usaacs. The game was certainly a big success, and turned a good amount into the funds for the soldiers.
