ATHLETICS WON EASY VICTORY
Connie Mack's Team Ran Up Big Score Against P.R.R.Y.M.C.A.
Connie Mack's team of professional football players administered a severe drubbing to the Pennsylvania Railroad Y.M.C.A. eleven yesterday at Columbia Ball Park, defeating the railroaders by the one-sided score of 40-0.
In view of the fact that the Homestead team, of Pittsburg, had defeated the railroad men by a score of 30 to 0 it was expected that the Athletics would try hard to at least equal that score, and when they did better the local admirers were elated. At no stage of the game did the railroaders have a chance to score, and never got closer to the Athletics' goal than the 30 yard line, from where they tried a drop kick for goal, which dismally failed.
In the first half the Athletics were met with a most determined resistance, and were only able to score twice. Davidson failed his kick for goal on the first touchdown, the half ending with the score 11 to 0 in the Athletics' favor.
The Athletics had apparently sized up their opponents in the second half, as they scored almost as they pleased, and had no difficulty in making gains upon almost every attempt. Davidson once making a run of 100 yards on the kickoff for a touchdown, but the referee brought the ball back to midfield for foul interference by Hawley Pierce. Kingden was also removed from the game for slugging, and others were warned for rough play.
When the ball did go to Pennsylvania Railroad they invariably lost it on downs, and were then absolutely unable to stop the ground gaining tactics of the Athletics. Pierce made the first touchdown in the half after five minutes of play. Deems made the second and Davidson the third. Dungan followed with another, and Wallace obtained the final score just before time was called, making the total 40 to 0.
The best work for the railroaders was done by Miller and Geiger, the former getting a twenty-five yard run around the end and the latter tackling true and hard. For the Athletics Wallace, Davidson, Pierce, Hewitt and Dugan all made star plays.
