Disgraceful Scene at the Athletic-Philadelphia Game
Over 3000 people witnessed the "Phillies" gain a decisive victory over "Connie" Mack's Athletics, at Columbia Ball Park, yesterday., by the score of 17 to 0, and incidentally were treated to an impromptu slugging match, in which Wood, Sternberger, Ryan, Randolph and McFarland played a part.
The disgraceful scene was enacted on a play where the ball was being run down the field, when Ryan tackled Sternberger and both men went to the ground. Sternberger started to slug Ryan, and when McFarland tried to separate the men, Randolph struck McFarland, and Wood then took a hand. The police then interfered and finally restored order and the game proceeded.
From the initial kick-off until the final whistle the "Phillies" were master of the situation, and had but little trouble in making gains around the end whenever the play was attempted and made their first touchdown in the first half, when Washburne ran around the right end for thirty-five yards. The kick-out for goal failed, and the first half ended with the score, "Phillies" 5, Athletics 0.
