SHENANDOAH BEATS BETHLEHEM PROS.

Injuries Take Out Three of the Local Team, But 10 Men Finish Game.

GOLDMAN AND HEATH HURT

The Bethlehem Bears went down to defeat at the hands of Shenandoah on Sunday afternoon, losing an Eastern Professional Football League game by the score of 20 to 0.

Play With 10 Men.

For more than half the game Bethlehem battled Shenandoah, a team that held Gilberton with its cadre of former college stars to a scoreless tie, with only ten men in the line-up and several of these playing out of their regular position. The complete Bethlehem squad numbers twenty players, the limit prescribed by the league. At game time on Sunday Manager Downey took roll call and found only eleven men available, including among those missing some of his best men. Seven of the players were unable to get to Shenandoah due to a break down of the automobile in which they were traveling.

With the crowd on hand there was nothing left to do but play the game, and Bethlehem started with every man available in the line-up. Fate struck another cruel blow when Hymie Goldman, the brilliant center, tore a ligament in a leg and was forced to retire after the first five minutes. Charlie Heath, a guard, substituted at center and on the first play he was injured and taken out. Bethlehem had ten men left and with this company of players decided to finish the game. "Bucky" McDonald was shifted from guard to a center position. However, Manager Downey did the heavy work, moving from a backfield position to the line when the club was on the defense and alternating with Max Levitz, the latter moving up to the line on offense, leaving three men in the backfield.

Bears Fight Hard.

Under that handicap the Bears put up a great fight but not good enough to stop the vicious thrusts of the Shenandoah backs. With the loss of one man in the backfield Bethlehem's offense was shot to pieces, while on defense the team was greatly weakened with several of the players playing out of their regular positions.

According to Manager Downey such a condition will never arise again. The players will go to all future games in a body [to] eliminate all chances of a break down.
