Thanksgiving Day, 1899
On Thanksgiving Day, 1899, some two-thousand spectators turned out to witness a football match between teams from Frankford and the Philadelphia & Reading YMCA. Members of that Frankford squad went on to form the Loyola Athletic Club in 1909. In 1912 the Loyola A.C. changed its name to the Frankford Athletic Association, which in turn gave rise to the Frankford Yellow Jackets.
The Frankford Gazette gave the following summary of the game:
"Touchdowns, McCormick, 2; Riddell, Latimer, Hornberger. Goals after touchdowns, Riddell, 3. Referee, E.M. Wilson, Haverford College. Umpire, D.G. Gimber, P&R YMCA. Linesman, H. Gransback and Frank T. Wilson. Timekeeper, James Davis. Time of halves, 25 and 20 minutes."
