Legion Topples Shenandoah In Big Turkey Day Battle
Atkinson, Pederson and Desmond Score Six-pointers..
Frankford Legion gridders won their fourth straight victory in six days when they trimmed Shenandoah before 5000 fans at Memorial Stadium, 21 to 0.
Both teams lacked the punch to score in the first half, although Shenandoah had several opportunities. Frankford made one determined march which was halted when a sever penalty set them back half the length of the field.
Between halves the Legion band entertained.
In the third period both sides took to the air and made decided advances. With only several minutes to go in the third quarter Frankford had Shenandoah with their backs to the wall. The ball was in the Miners' possession on their own 10-yard line. On a bad pass from center, Rice, who had been playing a bang-up game for the up-Staters. fumbled, the ball rolling into the end zone where Desmond fell upon it for the first score.
The fourth period was still young when Hutton recovered a blocked kick and raced thirty yards to Shenandoah's 3-yard line from where Pederson crashed the line for a touchdown.
Directly following the kick-off a miner's pass was intercepted and on the next play Atkinson raced 20 yards for the third and final touchdown. Wall kicked all three extra points.
The playing of Rice for the visitors was a feature of the game. In fact, he "toted' the ball for the coal-diggers three-fourths of the time. Their line also proved a good match for the Legionnaires.
For Frankford there was really no outstanding player, the whole team displaying that wonderful co-ordination that has rewarded them with victory so many times this season.
