POTTSVILLE TRIMS ATLANTIC CITY TEAM

Mahrt's 45-Yard Sprint Gives Miners 6 to 0 Victory Over Roses.

Atlantic City, Dec. 20. -- The Pottsville Maroons, 1925 champions of the National Football League, were lucky to beta out the Atlantic City Roses today at the Dog Track, 6 to 0. The Struggle was waged on a skiddy gridiron and during a steady downpour.

With less than 30 seconds remaining and  neither side having scored, Armand Mahrt, former University of West Virginia back, broke loose and skirted his left wing from the 45-yard strip, zig-zagging and straight-arming his way until he skipped over the Roses' goal line for a touchdown. These were the only points of the game. Walter French missed his try for another point.

The manner in which the Roses held the Maroons is considered a moral victory here. Twice in the first half Pottsville was stopped when less than a yard stood between the miners and a touchdown. The Roses never really threatened to go over the Pottsville goal line.

The game was staged under the most miserable conditions here this season. A drizzling rain drenched the spectators and the gridiron was ankle deep in mud.

Pottsville had the upper hand offensively, collecting 10 first downs against two for the Roses. Both of the latter's came in the first half.

However, the home club showed power on defense, several times blasting the hopes of the Maroons before Mahrt won the game with his 45-yard sprint for a touchdown.

French, former Army halfback, furnished the most thrills with his run-backs of punts. With the ball on the 56-yard mark French started his team to victory by ripping off 11 yards. Then on the next play Mahrt cut loose a touchdown and a triumph.

Tony Latone, the heralded sand lot star, also attracted attention with his vicious line smashing. However, twice when the Maroons were within the shadow of the roses' goal line and a few yards would have meant a touchdown, he was checked.  Line-up:
