Pittsburg? ...Notes on the Pittsburgh "H"

In 1890, the United States Board on Geographic Names dictated that the final "h" should be removed from the names of all cities that end with "burgh" and thus "Pittsburgh" became "Pittsburg". While newspapers of the day generally adopted the new spelling, the change met with resistance in other quarters and it was not uncommon to see the continued use of "h". The city's citizens, in particular, resisted the change, causing many businesses and even government officials to shift between the two spellings. One good example is the city's National League baseball club, which in 1894 wore "PITTSBURG" across the front of its jerseys, but the following season  reverted to the traditional spelling -- "PITTSBURGH". In 1911 the "h" was officially restored to the city name.
